Grievance Process and Statutory Escalation

The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 describe a three-tier mechanism. Sift currently provides Level I. Level II membership is not yet complete, so this page does not claim completed publisher compliance.

Level I: Platform Grievance Redressal Officer

Submit new complaints through this portal so they enter the tracked grievance process. Our Grievance Officer is:
Kumar Sagar Maiti (grievance@siftnews.in).
For a tracking reference, submit the form on this page. Email is available for follow-up correspondence.
• Acknowledgement is provided within 24 hours of receipt.
• Decision and reasoned communication are provided within 15 calendar days.

Level II: Self-Regulatory Body & Appellate Escalation

Under Rule 12 of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, if a complainant does not receive a decision within 15 calendar days from the Level I Grievance Officer, or is dissatisfied with the decision, the complainant may appeal within 15 calendar days to the self-regulatory body registered with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of which the publisher is a member.
In accordance with Rule 11(2)(d), formal membership enrollment with a registered self-regulatory body is currently in progress. Confirmed body details, official contact information, and appeal filing procedures will be published here immediately upon completion of enrollment.

Level III: Central Government Oversight Mechanism

An oversight mechanism is maintained by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (Rule 13 & 14), empowered to issue guidance, coordinate inter-departmental review, and ensure digital media publishers comply with the Code of Ethics.

Monthly Grievance Compliance Reports

To support the public transparency described in Rule 18 and Rule 19 of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, Sift publishes grievance records covering receipt, acknowledgement timelines, and resolutions. This reporting does not represent that Level II membership is complete.
